An environment within an environment, the Neil Barrett Spring/Summer 2023 show takes place in a surreal landscape reimagined inside an industrial space - the outside as inside, a destination as home. A shifted perception, as models traverse an imaginary terrain, towards an unknown, ideal destination, an oasis.

Here, nature returns to an urban space just as Neil Barrett returns to his own nature - precision, a heritage of uniform tailoring, and the 1990s minimalism that began his career. All still have relevance and resonance today. It is a collection of authenticity and actuality - reflecting the past, but sparking a journey towards the future.

A Spring/Summer collection, inspiration is drawn from the season - from uniforms born of extreme conditions, climate shifts. Engineered for heat, clothes are panelled and aerated to permit the body to breathe. Windows are opened onto skin, hybrid t-shirts incorporating mesh layers to reveal the skin. Piercing fabrics to affect the structure of material, eyelets become a form of reductionist decoration - punching holes in fabrics, they paradoxically embellish through elimination. Knits are opened, airy.

The palette combines sunbleached beige, ivory, pure white and fired red with black, like a shadow cast across the desert sand. Sequins glint like mirages. Fabrics are authentic and true: cottons in weights from poplin and jersey to drill and denim, alongside fine wools, nylons and leather. Utilitarian detailing is pragmatic: cargo pockets are decorative and practical, while zips permit volumes to transform. Alongside military uniforms, uniforms of urban life - jeans, sweatshirts, sweatpants - are treated with rigour and precision.

Just as the imaginary terrain of this show is a hybrid - interior, exterior, urban and nature - so the clothes themselves cross between different territories and uniforms, different walks of life and ages of man. Uniform anchors the collection - uniforms of military, uniforms of urban life, uniforms of evening and youthful celebration. Fused and cross-bred, they become a uniform for now, and of now.
